Thousands of German fans somewhere on Swiss streets hadn’t seemed to be bothered by the rain and a surprisingly cold July weather.

The decision to spend round about 24 hours in Basel to see the German women national team facing Denmark turned out to be one of the best stadium visits in 2025.

While making a time schedule for this trip, I took some risks of being late. Fortunately, it went as well as it was meant to be.

At 2pm, I arrived in Basel, immediately overwhelmed by huge advertisements of the EUROs. Seeing the representation of women’s sports out there was a common thread of this journey.

After checking in, I was about to accept to be late for the German fan walk and do some sightseeing instead.

Luckily, you wouldn’t need Google Maps to find the fans. On my way to the old town, I ran into the enormous crowd of German fans and the sightseeing plan was quickly postponed to next day.

The next hours passed by way too quick.

From walking to the “Joggeli” to seeing Germany win - it felt like a short deep breath. Despite of some enthusiastic danish fans, it was a “Heimspiel” (home game) for Germany. The last evidence for that was Basel singing the German song Major Tom which got popular once again during the men’s EUROs last year.

Before travelling to Basel, I was doubting if it would be possible to feel the tournament atmosphere outside of the stadium, especially when it’s not the host country playing.

At 10pm, as I was navigating my way to a small supermarket, I suddenly heard a crowd cheering.

Looking up from my smartphone, l witnessed fans watching Poland play against Sweden on a big screen in the middle of Basel. German, danish and local people were there. All ages, all backgrounds, all united by the action of the game. The doubts disappeared all at once.

Next morning, passing by a small bookstore, I read a quote from Ronaldinho translated into German and written accurately in big back letters: football is not only about goals, it’s about dreams.

Ironically, this cheesy saying summarises Basels vibe at the Women’s EUROs perfectly. A tournament that evokes hope. And shows one more time: Everyone watches women’s sports.
