Mexico: A women's wave — Terrace Edition

On August 24, Luiz (@canchapopular_), a couple of friends, and I (@andreaibarrag) were in the stands for a match that felt both surreal but also increasingly common in the women’s game: Club América vs. F.C. Barcelona, a friendly organized by Camp3onas in Mexico City.

For us, this match was about capturing the clash of styles, colours, and emotions that both teams bring to the pitch at the Estadio de la Ciudad de los Deportes.

América showed its trademark yellow wave of energy, while Barcelona, with stars like Alexia Putellas, Aitana Bonmatí, Claudia Pina, and Vicky López, carried not only the Barça badge but also the weight of being recent Women’s Euro finalists (with Aitana as the latest Ballon d’Or winner and Vicky as Golden Girl).

With our analog cameras, Luiz and I documented the whole day, from the atmosphere around the stadium before kickoff to the excitement inside once the match began, where lots of groups of friends and families gathered to celebrate.

Mexico is well known for its unofficial merchandising at all kinds of events, and this match was no exception.

All around the stadium you could spot the craziest and coolest merch not just from Club América but also from Barcelona and even pieces mixing both teams together.

The streets were flooded with Barça shirts, and at times it almost felt like being in Barcelona itself.

For me, as both a Barcelona and América fan, matches like this are a dream come true but also an exciting glimpse of how Mexican women’s football continues to reach new heights.
