There are some people who never really go away.

No matter how many years pass, how many generations come and go, or how many matches are played in the meantime.

There are people who manage to live on in the streets, in songs, in our memories, in family gatherings after dinner, and even in conversations between strangers.

That is why his image, almost as if it were a religion, begins to appear on walls, wherever they may be.

In some random alleyway in Rosario.

On a worn out shutter in the suburbs.

On the peeling wall of a football pitch in the provinces.

On the old concrete of a working-class neighbourhood where damp has been battling the paint for decades.

On a weather-beaten street corner in northern Argentina.

On the coldest wall in the south of our country.

There is his face. Looking off into the distance. Smiling. Defiant. As if he were still stepping onto the pitch.

And maybe it will continue to resonate. Because there are men who represented so much more than just football.

So much more than a skillful dribble. So much more than an unforgettable goal.

He represents something deeply part of who we are.

That impossible blend of talent and chaos. Of rebellion and tenderness. Of the local pitch and the world stage. Of falling down and getting back up. Of making countless mistakes and, even so, continuing to inspire love.

Because that is who we are too. A country that lives on the edge of everything, that breaks apart, that celebrates, that contradicts itself, that gets carried away easily and that never learnt to play by the rules.

And he was the best portrait of ourselves.

On the pitch, it brought us joy. The purest kind. The kind that makes you hug strangers, cry in front of the TV or run out to a square in your town.

But off the pitch, perhaps, he left something even stronger: the feeling that someone dared to stand up for those who were always on the other side of the table.

That one of our own could look power in the eye without bowing his head. That’s why the affection was never just about sport.

There are idols we admire. But he felt like one of us. And maybe that explains why his image continues to appear painted in every corner of the country.

Because murals aren’t just decoration. They are a form of resistance against oblivion. A way of saying “this happened”, “this made us happy”, “this represents us”.

That is also why simply uttering his surname anywhere in the world is enough to make someone smile.

In Naples, in Bangladesh, on a remote beach or in a tiny bar on the other side of the globe.

For millions of people, saying ‘Maradona’ is the same as saying ‘Argentina’.

It is speaking a common language, even if we do not share a single other word. Few symbols have achieved anything so immense.
